As part of the Ghibli Studio’s Howl’s Moving Castle (ハウルの動く城) R2 DVD you get a special 1/24 second film that was used in the theaters encased in an clear acrylic cube. Which frame of film you get is completely random so when I received my DVD from Amazon.co.jp, I eagerly opened the box containing the film cube before anything else. With my luck I got the following frame with Calcifer making a funny face.
Now I really liked this idea of film frames as merchandise. It’s a really novel way to provided merchandise that’s really part of the film. What can be more to the heat of the film than the film strips itself? But not satisfied with what I got, I went on a quest on Yahoo Auction Japan to get some better frames. I really wanted a frame with Sophie in it. However, I’m not the only one thinking like that and so a lot of good film cubes ended with very high bids. So keeping it within my budget, I got the following frame. It’s the scene when Sophie took Calcifer out of Howl.
Still not satisfied, I searched auction listing over and over again and finally was able to get the following frame with a relative cheap price. This is really a nice frame. Good thing everyone was gunning for frame with Howl in it. Personally, this sweet scene with Sophie and Calcifer is the perfect frame for me.
Finally an illustration from Howl’s Moving Castle.
